The development of sustainable fusion energy has reached a significant milestone with new experiments achieving a stable plasma state for longer durations than ever before. Fusion, the process that powers the sun, offers the promise of near-limitless clean energy without the radioactive waste associated with traditional nuclear fission. Recent breakthroughs in superconducting magnet technology and reactor design have brought us closer to the goal of ‘net energy gain,’ where the energy produced exceeds the energy required to initiate the reaction. While technical challenges remain in scaling these reactors for commercial use, the scientific community is optimistic that fusion could become a primary energy source by the mid-21st century, fundamentally transforming our global energy landscape and helping to solve the climate crisis.
